The region
The Mersey Deanery is a relatively small and compact deanery, and stretches from Southport, through Liverpool and St. Helens, across to the Wirral and to Warrington and Runcorn in North Cheshire, down to Chester, Crewe and Macclesfield in South Cheshire.
Liverpool's skyline is dominated by fabulous architecture, and has many stylish bars, clubs and restaurants, along with eight national museums and galleries.
The city was European Capital of Culture 2008, and many new developments have taken place as a consequence of this, including the development of a major new shopping centre in the city centre.
The sporting talent within Liverpool is immense! Two Premier League football clubs, Aintree and Haydock park racecourses, and many championship golf courses can be found within the City, while just outside Liverpool, world-renowned rugby sides can be seen in St. Helens, Wigan and Warrington.
A little further from the city, Cheshire is the embodiment of breathtaking landscapes and stunning country estates. Fine restaurants, glamorous shops and impressive historical sights - including ruined castles and stately homes - are in abundance.
The Mersey Deanery School of Medicine
Mersey Deanery School of Medicine manages the regional hospital medicine programme.
The training provided in all (hospital) medical specialties is of a high quality and is well-coordinated. Each year, you will be trained by a number of consultant physicians, skilled not only in their own fields, but also in supporting education for medical trainees, and you will also receive very valuable training from senior junior doctors and senior nursing staff during your placements.
We expect a high level of commitment from trainees, as adult learners taking responsibility to ensure progress with training at a satisfactory rate.
All trainees have educational supervisors, and within the trusts in which trainees are placed, college tutors oversee much of the day-to-day management of CMT and ACCS-AM.
The programme is coordinated across the region by a programme director, supported by CT1 and CT2-year leads.

The Mersey CMT programme offers excellent training which will provide the breadth and depth of medical expertise you require before embarking on higher and more specialised training.
The Mersey regional CMT scheme was established with the Mersey Deanery school of medicine in August 2005, and has been the RCP pilot site for many aspects of CMT, including the development of the ePortfolio and use of the curricula as a guide for learning in CMT.
Posts in all of the major medical specialties are available in the scheme, and each placement usually lasts for four months.
We group the teaching hospitals according to their geographical position; as the CMT programme lasts (in most cases) for two years, we ensure that one year of training is within a central hospital, and the other within a peripheral hospital (see lists below).
In both years, the placements may include one or more in an adjacent specialist trust.
The Mersey Deanery school of medicine aims to ensure that there is sufficient exposure to clinical medicine during CMT to satisfy the training needs described in the curricula. Posts with acute specialty-specific out-of-hours duties allow the opportunity to develop other skills - eg procedure competencies in the critical care unit.

All CMT rotations have 12 months in a central teaching hospital, and 12 months in one of the other training hospitals in the Mersey Deanery area.
As well as trust-provided teaching sessions for CMT trainees, we also run a successful regional teaching programme on a half-day session once a month. The venue rotates around the region to involve all teaching Trusts, with the programme designed to support the delivery of the CMT curriculum.
Progress in core medical training
CMT delivers training based on the JRCPTB curriculum, with progress monitored using ePortfolio reviews at months 8, 16 and 23 of training. A satisfactory ARCP at the end of the training year is necessary if a trainee is to be able to progress to the next stage of training.
