Wales - the nation!

You don’t need to speak Welsh to come and work in Wales...

Wales itself offers a wide range of lifestyle opportunities; there are cosmopolitan centres with lively shopping centres and busy nightlife, to university and market towns, with vibrant student cultures, great charm and strong artistic traditions (as well as large hospitals with many opportunities for training and experience - see further down the page!)

All are surrounded by outstanding scenery, and in close proximity to all there are wonderful recreational opportunities. Wales is passionate about sport; and there are multiple opportunities to participate in and support a wide range of sports throughout the country.

The coastline of Wales is renowned for its beautiful landscapes, splendid cliff top views and excellent kayaking, sailing and surfing. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is the UK's only truly coastal National Park, and the Gower Peninsula was the first place in Britain to be designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. Drive north of Cardiff for 30 minutes and you'll come to the Brecon Beacons; plus, the Snowdonia National Park covers 823 square miles of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside in North Wales.

Once they've experienced this coastline and Wales' superb hill-walking trails and climbing challenges, large numbers of visitors from around the world return year after year.

Medicine is a specialty that offers an incredibly diverse range of training opportunities, and the Wales Deanery offers a great variety of core medical training programmes.

To make the most of these opportunities, Wales offers a quality-assured programme that starts by providing a solid grounding in medicine. This leads on to a number of distinct strands, designed to provide the training opportunities and direction needed to get the most out of a career in medicine.

Following completion of the foundation programme, CMT trainees will undertake two years of core training (labelled CT1 and CT2), during which they will take up a number of different posts – typically either four or six months in duration, labelled 'rotations'.

These rotations will give trainees much varied experience of, and exposure to, a wide range of medical specialties, acute medicine, the workings of differently-sized and structured hospitals and trusts; as well as the chance to work with and for a much greater variety of colleagues and patients from different backgrounds and with disparate levels of experience; in addition to the opportunity to become much more involved in medical teaching and training.

Upon successful completion of CMT, trainees will be able to access a huge range of possible CCTs and careers in areas of medicine such as cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology & diabetes, gastroenterology, geriatric medicine, renal medicine, and many others.

For more information on the specialties covered by CMT, go to our web site or visit the JRCPTB website, at the links below:

In 2012, the whole of Wales will be one single unit of application (UoA). However, rotations are split into three regions:

Trainees appointed to programmes in each region do not rotate outside of that region.

The 2012 rotations are still being prepared. However, for an indication of the type of placements on offer, please see the 2011 Wales CMT post/programmes on offer. To view the 2011 preference form, please visit this link (under the section of 'programme information').

Interviews will be conducted in Cardiff for all regions, with interviews held on 24, 25, 26 and 27 January 2012. If you are successfully short-listed, you will be invited to book your own interview. (please see the interview page of this website for more information.

Preference forms, indicating all specialties and locations, will be sent to you after short-listing. You will be asked to return your preference form when you attend your interview.

If you are successful at interview, offers made from Wales will include your ranked order at interview, the exact location of the LHB and also the specialties at each site.
