Core Medical Training Recruitment

CT1 post numbers

This page of the website will contain details on the number of vacant CT1 posts available in each of the participating deaneries/UoAs in CT1 recruitment 2012.

Please note that these numbers are subject to change over time, but should give a good estimate of the likely numbers of posts available in each deanery/UoA.

[NB - details of the number of posts available in, and applications submitted to, each participating deanery/UoA in the 2010 and 2011 recruitment years are available at the foot of this page.]

Non-participation

The following deaneries will not be participating in round 2 of 2012 CT1 recruitment, as no vacant posts remain: KSS, London, Mersey, North Western, Northern Ireland, Oxford, Severn, Wessex, and West Midlands.

* In 2012, there will be no ACCS-AM vacancies in Mersey or Northern Ireland. Please do not apply to Mersey or Northern Ireland if you wish to be considered for an ACCS-AM post.

** The competition ratio is derived from the number of candidates who chose that deanery/UoA as their first choice. After short-listing not all candidates will be interviewed at their first choice deanery and therefore these are indicative numbers only.

Before reviewing the application data here from previous years' recruitment, please do read the section below, to ensure that the information here is not misinterpreted. Click on the link below, including for information on * competition ratios and † interview-at-first-choice numbers:

Previous years' data

While candidates are considering which deaneries/UoAs to select for their (up to) four preferences on application, some information which may be found useful is the level of competition at each deanery/UoA in recent years.

Please note - prior to 2012 recruitment, RCP-SRO-coordinated CT1 recruitment had included only CMT posts, and not ACCS. While we do not expect that the introduction of ACCS-AM will cause the expected levels of competition between deaneries/UoAs to change significantly, this should be borne in mind.

Post numbers *

The tables below show the numbers of vacant CMT CT1 posts available in the first round of recruitment in 2010 and 2011. Please note that these were the post numbers as at the start of the recruitment year, numbers in some deaneries were subject to small fluctuations during the year. The 2009 figures are not included here, as the application form and recruitment process were significantly different to now, and hence the figures may be of little relevance to 2012 competition.

In addition, only round 1 data used, and not round 2, as round 2 data varies more significantly year-on-year, and so including round 2 data may be a little misleading for a first round.

Applications submitted

Alongside post numbers are the numbers of applications - in total - received which stated the particular deanery/UoA as first-choice preference. This number of applications is then divided by the number of posts in that deanery/UoA to give a competition ratio, in the next column, showing the number of applications submitted per post to that deanery/UoA. Please note that this figure solely takes account of the number of applications submitted, and not how many applications were later assessed as ineligible or unappointable.

First-choice interviews

The fifth and last column ('interview at first-choice') displays a percentage figure for each deanery/UoA. This figure represents the proportion of (interviewed) candidates who stated that deanery/UoA as their first-choice, and then gained an interview at that deanery/UoA. Candidates who did not progress to interview are not included here.

So for example, a 100% figure next to Deanery ABC would mean that all candidates who put Deanery ABC as their first choice went on to be invited to interview at Deanery ABC. Whereas if Deanery XYZ has an 'interview at first-choice' figure of 10%, it means that only 1 in 10 of interviewed candidates who put Deanery XYZ as their first-choice preference went on to be interviewed by Deanery XYZ; and that the remaining 90% were all interviewed at their second, third, fourth choice deanery/UoA preferences.

Interpretation of figures

One short disclaimer here - obviously, past competition ratios are solely a record of recruitment in previous years. While it can give a general idea of how competitive the process of application/recruitment in different deaneries/UoAs is, there can be no guarantee that this will continue in future.
