Health Education North West - Mersey and Health Education North West - North Western are one organisation within Health Education North West (HENW).

While HENW is a single region, there will continue to be two distinct training programmes; ie Mersey and North Western. More information on the two areas is given across the tabs on this page.

The programme

Posts in all of the major medical specialties are available in the scheme, and each placement usually lasts for four months, thus usually trainees experience 6 specialties during the 2 year CMT programme.

As the CMT programme lasts (in most cases) for two years, we ensure that one year of training is within a central hospital, and the other within a peripheral hospital (see lists above). The programme is designed in 2 year tracks so that applicants can see which 2 Hospitals they would work in, assuming a successful application, when they are ranking posts. Allocation of a track will depend on applicant expressed preferences and also interview score.

The Mersey School of Medicine aims to ensure that there is sufficient exposure to clinical medicine during CMT to satisfy the training needs described in the curriculum, and all 2 year tracks will include a 4 month post in Acute Medicine, and a 4 month post in Geriatric Medicine as recommended by the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB). A wide range of other specialties are also included within the programme including cardiology, gastroenterology, haematology, diabetes and endocrinology, intensive care, neurology, oncology, renal medicine, rheumatology, respiratory medicine, infectious diseases, palliative medicine, dermatology, GUM and spinal injuries.

Posts with acute specialty-specific out-of-hours duties allow the opportunity to develop other skills – e.g. procedure competencies in the critical care unit.

Programme features

As well as trust-provided teaching sessions for CMT trainees, we also run a successful regional teaching programme on a half-day session once a month.

The venue rotates around the region to involve all teaching trusts, with the programme designed to support the delivery of the CMT curriculum. We receive excellent feedback for these sessions. There is also some teaching for the Part 1 MRCP examination, and support available for PACES preparation. We support the development of Quality Improvement (QI) and run an annual QI showcase event. The Liverpool Medical institution hosts evening Teach-In events and also a Careers evening for CMT trainees who are nearing the time for ST3 applications.

Audit, QI and research are all encouraged, and as undergraduate students from the University of Liverpool attend all teaching hospitals there will be ample opportunity to develop teaching skills.

Life in Mersey

Liverpool's skyline is dominated by fabulous architecture, and has many stylish bars, clubs and restaurants, along with eight national museums and galleries.

The city was European Capital of Culture 2008, and many new developments have taken place as a consequence of this, including the development of a major new shopping centre in the city centre.

The sporting talent within Liverpool is immense! Two Premier League football clubs, Aintree and Haydock park racecourses, and many championship golf courses can be found within the City, while just outside Liverpool, world-renowned rugby sides can be seen in St. Helens, Wigan and Warrington.

A little further from the city, Cheshire is the embodiment of breathtaking landscapes and stunning country estates. Fine restaurants, glamorous shops and impressive historical sights - including ruined castles and stately homes - are in abundance.

The programme

ACCS - Acute medicine

The specialty of acute internal medicine has one six-month post per programme. Acute internal medicine training will be based on the 2016 ACCS Curriculum and allows the trainee to achieve Level 1 competency in acute medicine.

An optional third year of acute medicine is available for trainees who wish to achieve ST3 competencies prior to ST application.

The acute internal medicine posts have been chosen to afford trainees the following work-based training experience:

  • Clinical and educational supervision by a consultant physician who has direct clinical responsibility for acute medicine on-calls (takes).
  • Regular participation and experience in acute medical takes, including responsibility for admitting and managing acutely ill medical patients.
  • Regular out-patient experience in acute internal medicine.
  • Ongoing care for ward-based acute medical in-patients.

Applicants are asked to express a geographic preference. Allocation to tracks is on the basis of expressed preference and interview score.

Core medical training

The three programme zones, while providing the same high standards, each offer differing flavours of training.

There are four trusts with seven sites in Lancashire and Cumbria; four trusts and seven sites in Greater Manchester North & West; and six trusts and sites in Central Manchester South & East.

Applicants are asked to express a preference between the different training tracks, to suit individual interests and career plans. Allocation to tracks is on the basis of expressed preference and interview score.

Each zone has 24 training paths, involving six four-month placements. These placements will involve at least one year in the main medical sub-specialties (geriatric medicine [care of the elderly], chest medicine, endocrinology/diabetes, gastroenterology, and cardiology).

Each path will provide 16-20 months of acute medical experience, with at least eight months of unselected acute medical 'take'. The majority of trainees will be based in one site for each year of the programme.

Each training path will allow a sub-specialist training focus for at least one four-month placement. This will be cardiology, haematology, intensive care, liver unit, neurology, oncology, renal medicine, rheumatology, specialist chest medicine, infectious diseases, or palliative medicine.

Programme features

ACCS - Acute medicine

Acute internal medicine posts will be supported by teaching programmes at each site.

Trainees will be encouraged to not only learn from these formal teaching programmes but also to use the workplace as a resource for experiential learning, with appropriate support and back-up from their educational supervisors and college tutors.

For trainees wishing to pursue a career in acute medicine the programme will afford the opportunity to study for the written examinations of the Royal College of Physicians and for such trainees study leave will be encouraged.

Participation in acute internal medicine departmental audit programmes will be expected and supported.

As many hospitals in the programmes are University of Manchester teaching hospitals, or affiliated teaching hospitals, teaching medical students may be an opportunity.

Teaching and presenting at departmental meetings will be expected.

Trainees who wish to publish case-reports or audit work will be fully supported, however the opportunities for original research will be very limited in this programme as the primary aim is attaining Level 1 competencies.

Core medical training

Skills Training Days are provided separately for CT1 and CT2 level trainees.

There is an active and successful NW regional Royal College of Physicians programme of education, including teach-ins and training days.

The Manchester medical school has recently undergone significant expansion, incorporating the use of problem-based learning. Junior hospital doctors, particularly in medicine, form an important group of the trainers at undergraduate level.

The University runs a regular programme of teaching the teachers, which CMT trainees are encouraged to attend. All trusts have an actively supported programme of audit/quality improvement; CMT trainees are expected to undertake audit/quality improvement and are actively supported to do so.

Research is also supported, with presentation of research at national and international meetings and publications of research achieved regularly by trainees in the trusts in the regional programme.

Life in North Western

North Western has something for everyone: from the coastal town of Blackpool with its Pleasure Beach to Pendle Hill located near Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; from our top-flight football clubs to the Imperial War Museum North and The Lowry in Salford, from the Trafford Centre and Curry Mile in Manchester to the farmers’ markets and tea-rooms of Lancashire, opportunities abound for outdoor pursuits, cultural activities, rest and relaxation. All of this is tied together with excellent motorway and rail links making us an excellent choice for your specialty training.
