Deaneries/UoAs
What are 'deaneries' and 'UoAs'?
Deaneries
For the purposes of postgraduate training, the UK NHS is divided into 16 regions; within each region, the responsibility for managing, overseeing and commissioning postgraduate medical & dental training is held by a body known as a 'deanery'.
As such, when a person wishes to apply to a medical training post in a particular area, they will apply to the relevant deanery which manages training in that region.
UoAs - units of application
It is still the case that when applying to CT1, they will apply to deaneries - candidates will select up to four preferences of deanery when completing their application form (see the application form page of this website for more information).
However, for the purposes of recruitment, deaneries may wish to split into differently-sized (usually smaller) bodies to allow candidates to target their applications better. For example, the East Midlands Deanery covers a very large area geographically, and so often divides into North & South when recruiting trainees.
As such, candidates will have the option of applying to either 'East Midlands (North)' and/or 'East Midlands (South)'; but neither of these bodies is technically a 'deanery', so the term 'unit of application' (UoA) is used.
Conversely, while there is only one body which handles postgraduate medical training in Northern Ireland, and another in Wales, referring to these nations as 'deaneries' may be a little misleading; so again, 'UoA' is used.
2012 deaneries/UoAs
In 2012, all deaneries/UoAs in England, Northern Ireland and Wales will be participating in coordinated CT1 recruitment. This section of the website contains a page for each of these deaneries/UoAs, including information about the region, the CT1 (CMT/ACCS-AM) programmes therein, and any other information which may be of use. Click on the name of the relevant deanery/UoA below to view the page.
NB - to see how many CT1 posts will be available in each deanery/UoA, please visit the CT1 post numbers page of this website.
